Neighbor notices smoke in back of house, alerts resident

LUCERNE VALLEY • A local man lost much of his home to a fire last Friday afternoon.

At around 2:30 p.m., Floyd Casey was in front of his home on Custer Avenue near Sutter Road when his neighbor told him that smoke was coming from the back of the house.

Jose Zuniga, Casey’s neighbor across the street, said he was in his front yard cooking food and saw the black smoke coming from Casey’s back porch.

LVHS principal submits resignation

Embattled Lucerne Valley High School Prinicpal Russell Munyan officially resigned last week.

Lucerne Valley Unified School District Superintendent Mike Noga said that Munyan offered his resignation to the district on Jan. 4. Noga declined to make any further comment on the issue.

Munyan was hired as the LVHS Prinicipal at the beginning of this school year. He got into a confrontation with students at the school in late October, which prompted complaints from parents and led to a third-party investigation sanctioned by the district.

Californians seem to love snow more than anyone else on Earth.

As the white stuff began to fall on the High Desert Sunday night, the most common reaction of locals was elation.

My Facebook feed has been buzzing with updates like these:

• “Old Man Winter finally made an appearance. So we headed off to the Narrows to enjoy the day.”

• “Snow ball fight, anyone?”

• “SNOW!”

• “It’s still snowing! The desert is so white and beautiful. Like a Thomas Kinkade painting.”

California 200 victim's mother sues driver

LOS ANGELES • The mother of a spectator who was killed along with seven others when an off-road truck crashed into the crowd at a desert race near Lucerne Valley is suing the driver and race organizer.

Doris Levinson filed a wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday at Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of her son’s estate and his 3-year-old daughter. The suit claims the tragedy could have been prevented if driver Brett Sloppy and organizer Mojave Desert Racing had taken proper safety measures.

Local woman earns doctorate degree years after giving up music career

Serina Harvey’s educational journey began with her love of playing the flute. It ended with a doctorate degree in marital and family therapy.

Harvey, a 29-year-old Lucerne Valley resident, received her doctorate from Loma Linda University last month. She received a master’s degree from the same university in 2006 and has worked as a counselor at Lucerne Valley Domestic Violence Outreach, Inc., since 2007. She also runs her own fledgling couples counseling business and a nonprofit ranch for victims of domestic abuse.

District keeps quiet about Munyan

Lucerne Valley Unified School District Superintendent Mike Noga said the district will make no comment about Lucerne Valley High School Principal Russell Munyan.

“There won’t be any comment from the district concerning the investigation,” Noga said Monday. “It becomes a personnel matter.”

Noga said the district would be in violation of Munyan’s legal right to privacy if it commented publicly on the investigation or on Munyan’s employment status.

Schools may re-open Tuesday

Lucerne Valley schools are likely to reopen Tuesday, but the decision will not be made until early Tuesday morning.

The snow that forced the closure of local schools Monday is expected to let up by Tuesday, but Lucerne Valley Unified School District Superintendent Mike Noga said school may remain closed if the roads are deemed unsafe.

“We’ll just have to play it by ear,” Noga said.
