The Lucerne Valley High School wrestling team is set to host the High Desert League finals Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.
The Mustangs and wrestlers from other HDL schools will battle it out at the Sgt. Brian L. Walker gym. The competition may last until 6 p.m. or later as wrestlers compete for the chance to enter the CIF playoffs. The top three from each weight class will advance to the postseason.
One of those wrestlers hoping to reach CIF is senior 120-pounder Alberto Barbosa, who’s coming off a victory by pin in last week’s 54-24 dual meet victor over Rosamond.
“I have a pretty decent chance this year,” Barbosa said, adding that he doesn’t have a set goal for how far he wants to go in CIF. “My goal is just to win, go as far as I can and do what I can.”
The Mustangs finished with a 3-1 record in duals thanks to last week’s victor which also featured a pin by 160-pound junior Tyler Beans, who wrestled at 170 pounds for the match.
Last Wednesday’s match was senior night; Barbosa was honored along with fellow seniors Ian Rosse, John Sullivan, Will Marx, Emmanuel Medel, Eddie Ayala and team captain Corey Gibson.
Head coach Tommy Hagen said the team has been short on experience this season but the attitude has been positive.
“They’re just really coachable kids who really made the season fun,” Hagen said.
