One airlifted after garage catches fire in Gem Tract

LUCERNE VALLEY • Three people suffered smoke inhalation but firefighters saved a home from destruction after a detached garage caught fire near Carnelian Road early Saturday morning, authorities said.

A person at the scene suffered severe smoke inhalation and was airlifted to a trauma center, according to a San Bernardino County Fire Department report. Two others suffered minor smoke inhalation and were transported by ground ambulance. The identities of the victims were not released. According to a County Fire release, the victims were young males who were driving by and stopped to assist the owner.

A County Fire Station 8 engine, ambulance and water tender responded to a call at 1:21 a.m. Saturday on Carnelian Road just east of Mesa Road. They found a detached garage fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters saved the nearby house with help from other county personnel from Spring Valley Lake and Victorville. The garage and its contents sustained an estimated $20,000 worth of damage according to initial reports.

American Medical Response ambulances, a battalion chief and a fire investigator were also called to the scene.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
