With a winning record before Winter Break, the Lucerne Valley High School boys basketball team is set to begin league play this week.
The Mustangs were 5-3 heading in the Agape League opener on Tuesday at Hesperia Christian (the game occurred after this week’s Leader went to press).
LVHS plays at Academy for Academic Excellence on Friday at 7:30 p.m., at Victor Valley Christian on Jan. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and at Apple Valley Christian on Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m. The games against the Apple Valley schools will be played at the James A. Woody Community Center.
The Mustangs will not return home until they host Excelsior on Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Before the break, the Mustangs picked up back-to-back wins against Immanuel Christian of Ridgecrest.
LVHS won the first contest at home, 67-28 on the strength of Lonye Logan’s game-high 24 points and a solid defensive effort.
“Jason Hart (assistant coach) and I have been stressing defense and rebounding from the beginning and the boys really took it to the next level,” LVHS coach Daniel Stratton told The Leader in an email.
Daniel Stratton added 15 points and seven steals.
The Mustangs traveled to Ridgecrest for the next game and came back with a 46-15 victory. Logan again led the way in scoring with 18 points. Mike Alarcon recorded a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds and 10 points.
GIRLS HOOPS: The LVHS girls basketball team is also back in action. They play the same opponents at the same locations; the girls games are scheduled to begin 90 minutes prior to the boys games.
WRESTLING: The wrestling team is back on the mat as the team travels on Saturday to the Arroyo High School Tournament. The Mustangs will host Bishop in a dual meet on Thursday, Jan. 17 with the meet starting at 5 p.m.
