Local garden club marks graves with holiday wreaths
By KRIS REILLY
Members of the Desert Crossroads Garden Club spent Monday morning laying holiday wreaths on the graves of more than 200 veterans interred at Lucerne Valley Memorial Park.
Club members spent weeks making the wreaths, which are made of vines and evergreen branches. Sarah Delperdang of the Desert Crossroads Garden Club said they hope to leave the wreaths up until after New Year’s Day, or for as long as they stay green.
Garden club members were joined in laying the wreaths by other volunteers, including Doris Ladenburger, whose son Brian Walker was killed in Afghanistan last Mother’s Day.
A brief ceremony was planned for Monday morning, including a speech from Pastor Richard Wood of Lucerne Valley Community Church.
This is the first year the club has done this, but Delperdang said she hopes the tradition will last for years to come.
